Social platforms do not show your full image in the feed. They generate a much smaller preview and, while shrinking it, they treat transparency as an on/off decision rather than a smooth gradient. This tool uses exactly that step: every pixel you hide is made transparent in a fine checkerboard pattern, so half of it disappears and half of it stays. In the small preview the average transparency of each block falls below the platform's threshold, the whole block is dropped, and the picture is simply not there. Open the same file at full size — by long-pressing it or tapping it open — and the checkerboard is drawn with its real pixels, so the picture comes back.

The whole trick lives in the transparency channel, and JPEG has no transparency at all. That is also why sharing from a phone app usually breaks it: most mobile apps re-encode what you send, the file becomes a JPEG, the transparent half is filled in with a solid colour and the picture is visible from the start. Moving the PNG to a computer and posting it from a desktop browser keeps the file intact. The tool exports a palette-based PNG on purpose — it stays small, and small files are far less likely to be re-encoded.

Nowhere. Every step — reading the file, finding the subject, building the pattern, writing the PNG — runs inside your own browser. Your photo is never uploaded to a server, and there is no account to create. If you close the tab, nothing is left behind.

Because outlines are switched on. Outline mode deliberately leaves the edges visible so people get a hint of what is hidden. If you want a complete surprise, turn outlines off — the preview then gives away nothing at all. The revealed area figure above the preview tells you exactly how much you are giving away: 0% means the small preview is empty.

Pictures with a clear subject work best — a face, an animal, a single object. Use the automatic subject selection first, then fix the edges with the brush. Keep the revealed area under about ten percent if you want people to be genuinely surprised. And post the proof: share what the preview looks like next to what it really is, so people know there is something to press.
